A real choice in Florida's U.S. Senate race ‎

Hotel di Kuala Lumpur - Liberal columnists have enjoyed spending barrels of ink deriding the Tea Party movement and highlighting the supposed troubles it causes the Republican Party. In his Friday commentary about the upcoming Florida primary race between Gov. Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio, liberal columnist E.J. Dionne mischaracterizes Rubio’s supporters as being anti-government.

I believe that Rubio supporters are for limited government as described in the Constitution and not anti-government. Rubio offers a real choice and an opportunity for the change from politics as usual that voters thirsted for when they elected our current administration.

In November 2008, American presidential voters had the choice between two liberal candidates — one young, inexperienced, very articulate and handsome; the other much older, not an orator, carrying a lifetime of baggage and representing the party in power. Both espoused pretty much the same liberal goals.

The administration has demonstrated that elections do have consequences — in a way that has activated the Tea Party people and will likely fundamentally change our country one way or another. Dionne may suspect trouble.

The Tea Party and the more fringe elements of the GOP have pushed the party to the extreme right.

Take John McCain as an example. He's now saying that he was never a "maverick," the word that he and his running-mate used so often during the 2008 election that it became a running joke.

It may be that the average Tea Party followers are not anti-government, but the LOUDEST teabaggers are definitely anti-government.

In an election year where independents will be trying to figure out how to vote, I don't think they will forget the lesson of the years 2000-2008.

The GOP/Tea Party would be wise to remember those years, as well.
